Gustin Kiln Firing: November 2010

The Gustin kiln in South Dartmouth, MA was loaded November 6th - 9th, and fired November 10th - 15th. Above is an image of the anagama before the side walls to the firebox were stacked. The chambers were unloaded Saturday, December 4th. Below is an image of the front stack fired:

During the firing of the anagama chamber, we introduced charcoal into the firebox; this was done at the end. You can see how this was done by watching the video below. A total of sixteen bags of natural charcoal were put into the kiln.

It was a very good firing...lots of ash and heat. Cone 12, the highest we had in the kiln, was close to a molten mass up front, which means we were close to, if not at, c/14. Here are some of my pieces from the anagama:

(This work is available for purchase; correspondence at lmkoonce@mindspring.com  for pricing, dimensions, descriptions, and more images of particular pieces).

Loading and Firing with Jeff Shapiro

I recently had the special opportunity to help Jeff Shapiro load and fire his anagama kiln. Jeff is a true master at his art and my time spent there was like a one-on-one workshop, an unparalleled experience. I came away with a more grand awareness of firing with intent. Jeff's aesthetical approach to his work, both in the forming process, as well as towards firing, provided me with a deeper insight into the direction for my own work.

Kiln stacked.

Jeff's wife Hinako stoking.

The results were quite spectacular, atleast from my aesthetical standpoint, and demonstrated what can be achieved from firing with wood. Prolonged heat and flame, ash, and coals can have an astounding effect on raw clay. Here are some of my pieces that came out of this firing:
