Salt Glaze

I have always liked salt glazed pottery. While living in the Seagrove area of North Carolina, I had the opportunity to do quite a bit of it. Recently I have wanted to investigate its use on my current forms. Fortunately, Eric Smith (E.M. Smith Pottery) lives a couple of towns to the west of me, where he maintains his studio, producing wood fired salt glaze ware. Eric was kind enough to let me put a test pieces in his firing a couple of weeks ago, which is pictured below. This is made from my regular porcelaineous stoneware clay body, with a slip coating of Erect, NC clay, a wild clay I obtained many years ago from Al McCanless of Dover Pottery. This piece doesn't demonstrate the typical "orange peel" effect of salt due to its high silica content, which tends to lap up the salt. The wood ash further fluxes it all, allowing for the development of wonderful green glass.

East Carolina University School of Art and Design Alumni Exhibition

It is a pleasure to have one of my wood fired vessels exhibited in "East Carolina University School of Art and Design Alumni Exhibition". I grew up in Greenville, NC, where ECU is located, and it is where I attended undergraduate school to study Art. Of the four venues exhibiting this alumni show, it is personally gratifying that my piece will be on exhibit in the Greenville Museum of Art. This is a building I passed by, and visited, many, many times during my childhood. An honor, indeed!
This is the tokkuri (sake flask) that will be on exhibit, along with its tomobako (wooden storage box)...

The East Carolina University SOAD Alumni Exhibition will be held in Greenville, NC,  September 4 - 26, 2015.

The opening reception will be held at four venues:
Wellington B. Gray Gallery,
Greenville Museum of Art,
Emerge Gallery at the Pitt County Arts Council,
and the Faulkner Gallery at Joyner Library on Friday, September 4th from 5:00-8:00pm as part of Uptown Greenville’s ArtWalk.
