Both vessels are made from a stoneware clay dug in the Seagrove, NC area. There were no additives to the clay, other than feldspar chips, to make these pieces; they were wood fired in an anagama kiln to c/12.

The show will be on view from September 10th - October 30th, 2010 in the Frankie G. Weems Gallery, Meredith College, 3800 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, North Carolina.

Dix-Duff Anagama and Train Kiln Firing

I was in Brevard, NC during July for a week long loading and firing with Judith Duff and John Dix. John was visiting the United States from his home in Sasayama, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan.

We had a crew of twelve to simultaneously fire Judith's anagama kiln and train kiln. Loading began on the afternoon of the 14th and preheat was over night. The train kiln fired off Friday evening and was reduction cooled. The anagama finished Saturday morning and was fired with apple wood as the primary fuel. Great results were obtained from both kilns. Below are some of the pieces I had come out:

Gustin Anagama Firing

We loaded the anagama kiln at Chris Gustin's studio in South Dartmouth, MA last month (May) for three days, then fired for six days. Jeff Shapiro drove down from his studio in Accord, NY to load and fire with us.
